Eastern Cape
Some other places we visited in the Eastern Cape...........
MORGAN BAY
Often described as an 'Eastern Cape paradise', Morgan's Bay lies 10 minutes' away from the Kei River mouth and an hour from East London in the Eastern Cape. This is a beautiful part of the coastline that forms part of the Wild Coast with its rugged cliffs, known as Morgan Bay cliffs. A long stretch of sandy beach about 1.5 km long is a walker’s paradise. The wide diversity of fauna and flora make this area particularly beautiful, due to it being located in a portion of the Eastern Cape in which 5 different biomes meet. The area is surrounded by fynbos, grasslands, forests, valley thickets and semi-desert scrub creating a haven for a myriad of animals and over 270 different bird species. Included is the call of the fish eagle, for this is the seasonal breeding ground for these birds as well as crowned cranes.
PORT ELIZABETH
Port Elizabeth is one of the largest cities in South Africa, situated in the Eastern Cape Province, 770 km east of Cape Town. The city, often referred to as “PE” and nicknamed "The Friendly City" or "The Windy City", stretches for 16 km along Algoa Bay, and is one of the major seaports in South Africa. It is also referred to as Africa's Watersport Capital. Port Elizabeth was founded as a town in 1820 to house British settlers as a way of strengthening the border region between the Cape Colony and the Xhosa. It now forms part of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality which has a population of over 1.3 million.
PORT St JOHNS
The setting of Port St Johns is possibly the most dramatic in South Africa with the Umzimvubu River cutting a huge gorge right to the sea where it then squeezes between the river’s edge and the red stone cliffs of the gorge. Twin mountains, the Thesiger and Sullivan, lie on either side of the river mouth like bastions and are regarded as the gates of Port St Johns, which, despite this splendour, is largely a magnet for hippies, eccentrics and backpackers. There are 3 good beaches, excellent fishing in the area. Port St Johns has a rather chequered history which includes the growing of cannabis instead of tobacco.
STORMSRIVER
Storms River is a river in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa located about 65km east of Plettenburg Bay. The spectacular river mouth is located in the Tsitsikamma National Park.
